How To Do A No-Follow Link on Squarespace

What are they and why do they matter?

No-follow links are often asked of bloggers when they are doing sponsored posts. The easiest way to think about them in comparison to normal links is to imagine the following:

Situation 1:

A friend tells you that they loved the service that they had in a restaurant. They recommend you go there and tell you what they had. You're chuffed because you trust this person's honest opinion and now when you pass the restaurant decide to go in for lunch.

Situation 2:

A friend tells you about a restaurant that they loved and recommends a dish on the menu. When you decide to go there, you find out that they were paid to tell you but didn't disclose that. Now you feel slightly cheated and feel like you were tricked.

Google feels the same way. Search engines crawl a website like a spider to find the relevant information for search enquiries - think Heading 1, 2, keywords, maps, etc. It also goes through the links on your page and goes to the website it is linked to. The more links that point to your website, the more it says to Google that you are a pretty big deal. However, people started to take advantage of this and pay for posts with links in them. To make sure that there is an even starting position for websites, search engines ask you to put in a no-follow bit of code before a sponsored link. This tells Google, like it says on the tin, to not follow/crawl that link. Users that see the link can still follow through the link, it's just for search engines.

How to do no-follow links on Squarespace in two easy-steps

1. Choose 'Markdown' from the content block options.

2. Enter copy into the markdown box

Use the 'Markdown' box as if it was your usual text block. Write your content in and then just before where you want to put your no-follow link, put in and replace with the appropriate link & text this code:  <a rel="nofollow" href="(your link goes here)" target="_blank">(your text goes here)</a>

For instance, below to the right is a screenshot and to the left is what it looks like on the blog:

Click, 'Apply'. That's you!

Remember to put the whole paragraph that has the no-follow link in the markdown so that it looks like a normal paragraph.
